I love my boyfriend. He is truly my best friend.
Reminds me of that Quietdrive album,
"When all that’s left is you."
So….yesterday was pretty much one of the best days of my ENTIRE LIFE.
For those of you who have known me for years and years…you should know that Anberlin is a band who has been very close to me for a really, really, really long time. Anberlin and The Classic Crime are my two favorite bands of ALL TIME, and I’ve been a huge fan of both bands since my early teen years. I’ve seen Anberlin in concert several times, but a few months ago (around June or July or so), they announced that they were doing this thing called Anberlin’s All-Access Pass 2.0. Basically for $150 you would get VIP treatment and get to spend the day with the guys of Anberlin before the show, and THEN get to watch their set from the side/backstage! I KNEW I had to do it, and since Anberlin is Jordan’s favorite band as well, I thought it would be great to buy us tickets to see them for our 4 year anniversary (which was conveniently the same week as the Anberlin concerts in California).
Back in July, I waited in front of my computer until the tickets went on sale, and I IMMEDIATELY bought them because there were only 6 spots per concert. I didn’t want them to sell out so it was a now-or-never decision.
Months and months passed, and finally yesterday was the actual concert!
I was sent an email instructing us to arrive at the venue (Majestic Ventura Theater) box office at 3pm, so Jordan and I left LA around 1:45pm since it was a little over an hour drive from LA to Ventura. Anberlin is also playing in LA this week (Oct 8), but that’s a Tuesday and Jordan and I wouldn’t be able to get off work early enough for the VIP access. Anyways, we got to the venue right at 3 and met the 4 other VIP members. There were 3 siblings - Mandy, Michael, and Mariah, who were SUPER friendly and basically became our new friends, and then another guy named Greg who just came by himself. We met with this guy named Scott (who I think is one of Anberlin’s roadies/merch guy), and he eventually took us INTO ANBERLIN’S TOUR BUS. So….I didn’t know we were actually going INSIDE of it. That wasn’t specifically listed in the details of what we would be getting out of this package, but I wasn’t complaining! I was freaking out inside because I could not believe we were actually allowed inside.
Once we were inside Anberlin’s tour bus, we met all of the guys and they let us sit down while they all stood facing us. We went around introducing ourselves and honestly I think the majority of us were just in awe of how we were in the tour bus haha. When it was my turn to introduce myself and where I was from, I mentioned I was originally from San Jose but moved to LA after graduating in May. Stephen (lead singer) and Nate (drummer) asked me why I had moved down to LA, and I said it was because I got a job working for a jazz record label, and they were both impressed and were like, “WOW! That’s awesome!” If only I could work for a label that they are on….DREAM COME TRUE.
Oh! I also baked Anberlin a cake, and Nate and Joey (lead guitarist) had a piece of it :D They were super excited about it! :) I got to take a picture of me and Nate in the tour bus and Nate was holding the cake too :P
After hanging out in the tour bus for a little bit, we all went outside and started playing Cornhole. Basically it’s like bean bag toss, haha. I was partners with Nate (heh…he might be my favorite :P), and we played against Joey and Michael. Jordan was teamed with Deon (bassist) and he was against Christian (rhythm guitarist) and Greg. Basically all of us VIP members sucked cause none of us had ever played before lol. I knew Jordan and I should have practiced earlier!
After playing Cornhole, we got free Anberlin t-shirts from Scott, and then we all took pictures with Anberlin! First we took a group shot with all of the VIPs and Anberlin, and then we got to take individual photos :) Anberlin posted our group photo on their Instagram (go look at it and find me!) and we also got an Instax Polaroid photo of us with the band to keep!
After photos, we went inside the venue to watch Anberlin sound check! Being a musician who has performed in hundreds of concerts, this was all too familiar to me…EXCEPT the fact that it was MY FAVORITE BAND on the stage. At this point it occurred to me that these people that I’ve idolized and loved for so long are so similar to me…we’re all musicians and they do the same things I’ve done while touring and everything. I just love that :P Soundcheck was pretty awesome. They played Dismantle.Repair. in full, and also played their new single, City Electric. It was awesome seeing them play these songs with NOBODY ELSE in the venue. We were able to get up close and personal and I took a few videos and some photos!
Once sound check was over, we had about an hour to kill before doors opened at the venue. Because we were VIPs, we got to be at the front of the line/got to go into the venue first, even when there were dozens of people that were lined up outside the venue for hours! Jordan and I walked around Ventura (there was such a cute little village/downtown area situated around the venue) and got dinner at The Habit. It was sooo freaking hot outside and I was so sweaty D:
At 6pm, we got back to the venue and went inside. Jordan and I stood with Mandy, Michael, and Mariah at the very front of the stage on the side, because right before Anberlin’s set we had to get up and go backstage so we could watch them :) The first band that performed was From Indian Lakes…and I had no clue who they were. They weren’t too bad. The second band was Lydia, which seems to be a pretty popular band. They had a TON of fan girls that kept yelling “HAVE MY BABIES!” and stupid crap like that.
After Lydia, all of us VIP members met together by this door that would take us up to the stage. We were escorted backstage and I got to see all the Anberlin guys waiting backstage, and Stephen with his wife and their two little daughters! OMG IT WAS SO CUTE I WAS DYING. Stephen has a baby and a toddler, and the toddler was wearing these HUGE and super protective headphones so they wouldn’t damage her ears. omg they were pink and so big on her tiny head, I was dying at the cuteness.
All of us VIP members stood on either side of this opening where the guys from Anberlin would walk between us to go on stage. We all wished them good luck as they walked past us to get on stage and I was totally vlogging the whole thing haha. They went on stage and played their set and KILLED IT! omg I recorded almost every song on my iPhone (I skipped like 3 songs that were slower), and it was so crazy watching from backstage. We could see all of the “peasants” in the audience and I couldn’t believe that I was watching from the sidelines. Granted, the sound isn’t very good back there because the speakers are all directed towards the audience, but I could recognize every song anyways. I could mostly hear Nate since he was drumming in the back, and Christian on guitar because he was on the left side which is where we were. It was definitely a different experience not being in the crowd and not rocking out or anything, but I was totally singing along to all my favorite songs and smiling the entire time.
When they finished their set, they gave us smiles and high fives and Stephen even patted me on the back! I was dying -swoons-. Since The Maine was headlining (it’s a co-headlining tour and they switch off every other tour), we had to get off stage and go back into the audience.
Jordan and I watched The Maine play a few songs, and then we decided to leave because we don’t really listen to them. We went to the merch table where Scott gave us our signed copies of Anberlin’s setlist, and then we left Ventura!
Overall…it was seriously the BEST concert experience I’ve ever had. It was expensive but a million times more worth it. If they have VIP next time they come around, I am totally investing in it. Now every other concert I go to from now on will suck in comparison to this one…haha.
I am so happy. This was such an incredible weekend. I wish I could relive yesterday all over again. Anberlin, I love you so much. Anberlin and TCC and my other top favorite bands are the reason why I wanted to major in music management and work in the industry. I wanted to be surrounded by the music that has made my life worth living, and that has made me the happiest and will always make me happy. It doesn’t get any better than this.
Originally, Cara and I were just going to get Umami Burger for dinner and then walk around Santa Monica Place and Third Street Promenade. Instead, soooo much more happened.
Ohhh man. I seriously did not expect all of this to happen tonight. This was probably one of the best Friday nights I’ve had in a long time. I think this is just going to be a great weekend in general because JORDAN AND I HAVE VIP TICKETS TO SEE ANBERLIN TOMORROW! We have to get to the show super early because we get to watch them soundcheck, hang out with the guys by their tour bus and take pictures, etc. And then we get to watch them from the side of the stage during the concert! I AM SO EXCITED I HAVE BEEN WAITING FOR THIS SO LONG AND I BOUGHT THOSE TICKETS MONTHS AGO! I have been preparing myself to listening to almost nothing but Anberlin this entire week. As Jordan says, “my body is ready” to rawk out!
Ok, I seriously need to go to bed now haha. Tomorrow is going to be a long but AWESOME DAY!
I just unfollowed a crapload of people (I cannot keep up with all of this reblogging and nobody writing about their actual lives anymore), so yeeeah. Cloggin’ my dashboard. I’m only following people I know instead of just random tumblrs with fun pictures to look at. I have Pinterest for that :P
Maybe I should start doing monthly recaps on here to give summaries of how I’ve been doing. I felt like writing one for September because I think this past month has been pretty eventful for me!
I think these 4 things have been the biggest events that have occurred this past month. Oh! And I wanted to mention a few other things that aren’t as life-changing as the 4 things I’ve just talked about, but I wanted to mention anyways because they also occurred this month :P
And now today is October 1, which means it is FINALLY MY FAVORITE MONTH OF THE YEAR! There are a ton of things I’m already looking forward to, and hopefully this month is even better than September was to me! :)
My parents drove down to visit me for the first time since helping me move into my apartment. I can’t believe it’s been over 3 months since they’ve been here!
We ate so much delicious food, including snazzy Japanese food at 4 On 6 (supposedly one of the best sushi places in LA), Fogo de Chao Brazilian Steakhouse (an AMAZING experience; hoping to go back!), and Clay Oven Indian cuisine :)
They also 1) brought me SO much stuff from home including a pantry full of food, supplies for my apartment, etc.), and took me shopping at Costco, Orchard Supply, and Ralphs.
It was great seeing them again. I wish they could have stayed longer, but at least they were finally able to come down and visit!
Excited to be going to NorCal during my birthday weekend in October :)
Also, my parents left a little earlier than I had expected today (early afternoon), so Jordan surprised me by spontaneously driving up to LA to see me! We spent the rest of the evening pigging out on the food my parents bought me and watching tv :D
In the past week I’ve been promoted at my current job, and have turned down two other music industry jobs because of it.
Maybe this is what Hatschek means when he says “You know you’re doing well when you reach a point where you’re the one who’s turning down companies and their offers, rather than them turning you down.”
Really hoping everything just gets better and better from this point. Onwards and upwards!
